Spamprotection for Forms: Accessibility & GDPR

meteoguard does not let your users search for stairs, motorcycles or traffic lights, and typing illegible text is a thing of the past. Your website can be effectively protected against attacks from spam bots on forms in a barrier-free and data protection-compliant manner.

Spam attacks on forms are becoming increasingly sophisticated, so simple protective measures are no longer enough to defend against spam attacks on your own forms. So-called CAPTCHA (fully automatic capability test to distinguish between computers and humans) can help against this. However, there are also several problems with CAPTCHA, which we solve for our customers with our system and the partnership we have entered into.

The fact that the CAPTCHA service is also permitted under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) without active consent is crucial for combating form spam.

CAPTCHA services that are not allowed to be used without the consent of website users under the GDPR are of course pointless. These include systems such as "reCAPTCHA" from internet giant Google. A form spam bot simply does not give consent, so the protection must not become active. This makes the decision to use a free service a choice between illegal or ineffective.

For a better understanding: In principle, CAPTCHA systems should be permissible under the GDPR, which is not always the case, and they should also be accessible. meteoguard is such a system, which aims to generate an economic calculation for the spam robot with the help of CAPTCHA.

However, since reCAPTCHA not only protects forms but also transmits data (IP address, which page is currently being accessed, where the user is coming from—i.e., what was the previous page...), it must still be specified in the privacy policy and, if necessary, above all—and this is important here—the consent of the user must be obtained.

WAI- & GDPR-conform Webform-Spam-Protection

Description

CAPTCHA can be used to largely protect forms from being used by spam bots. The systems behind the CAPTCHA systems are of course always in direct competition with the spam companies whose business model is to send spam via forms. The system is called when a form is submitted - this is also the calculation model for this feature. Two features are important for this "Feature as a Service":

  • Accessible application for forms
  • GDPR-compliant without consent

How it works

CAPTCHA systems run numerous processes in the background that analyze browser behavior. In contrast to some other CAPTCHA systems, however, this system does not require any special hurdles for people. It is sufficient to send the form normally, the analysis is based on the behavior of the person in front of the screen, so it is calculated whether it should be a real person.

  • No puzzling search images
  • No copying exercises for illegible texts
